Lots of locals make it a tradition to stop at La Fonda Mexican restaurant in Overton after a day at Valley of Fire for chile rellenos, chile Colorado, tacos al carbon, and margaritas. You'll feel as if you're a world away from the lights of Las Vegas. One of the best ways to do this trip is to stay at Red Rock Resort Casino and Spa, which is about 20 minutes west of the Strip and located right off the Charleston exit to I-215. You'll recognize the incredible colors from some of the movies that have been filmed here, like Total Recall and Star Trek Generations. Someone with mobility issues can still see plenty, because if you're not a hiker, a drive all the way through Valley of Fire will still give you all the highlights of the changing scenery.ĭo you need a guide? You can hire a guide for groups and Valley of Fire occasionally has special events, but the best way to plan for your hikes is to research the length and difficulty you're prepared for on the park website, or to speak to one of the staff in the visitor center.Īnything you’ll be remembering weeks or months or years from now? Some of the must-see sites in Valley of Fire are Elephant Rock, which is next to the east entrance and is (duh) an arched rock formation that resembles an elephant the strange Beehive formations (you can climb some of them) the short Mouse's Tank hike that takes you along petroglyphs and Rainbow Vista, which takes you on a climb up a hill that gives you a panoramic view over Valley of Fire. The drive takes just slightly over an hour from Las Vegas, and it's a smart idea to get an early start in the morning. Who tends to visit the park? Valley of Fire is open during the daytime (it closes at sunset), and those who come to explore its 40,000 acres of bright red sandstone, petrified trees, and ancient petroglyphs are usually adventurous nature-lovers who have seen the sights closer to the Las Vegas Strip and want to venture farther afield. Everyone knows about Red Rock Conservation Area, Lake Mead and the Grand Canyon, but not as many people know about the flaming colors, incredible rock formations and ancient petroglyphs of Valley of Fire. What’s the big picture here? Valley of Fire is one of the most spectacular-but possibly underrated-of the sites you can see around Las Vegas.
